I especially remember the Fourth of Julys when I was a child growing up in Topeka, Kansas in the 1950's. My father was a very active member of the American Legion and the 40/8 club. In the morning there was parade downtown in which my father and his friends took part. I remember how hot it was on those days, that 100 degree, Kansas dry hot. Later in the day there was a picnic for Legion members and their families at a local park. There were hotdogs and endless wonderful food, chasing and playing tag with the other kids, and swinging our heart outs on the swings and twirling on the merry-go-rounds.
