My name is Bob brabham, and I produced many of the original Slinky Commercials and jingles years ago in Columbia, S.C. Now some 40 years later I was called by Tom Cureton, of Barton & Cureton Advertising Agency in Columbia, S.C., who had the account, and an old friend, and asked if I wanted to write the "book" and the music for a stage musical about the toy and the life of Betty James. WOULD I! Now after a year and four months of talking with Mrs. james (before she passed away) and Tom Cureton, I gathered all the information I needed, then called my daughter, Becky Brabham, a talented singer and song writer, and we made all the needed agreements to start on the stage musical songs. Today, January 5, 2009, the book has been written by Tom Cureton and me, the song demos recorded, and a short DVD is being produced to send to our mentor, Michael kerker, (The ASCAP Director Of Musical Theater in The United States) And here we go! My daughter and I have been professional musicians and song writers for over 30 years, so this challenge was right there waiting for us to be done.
I wa so lucky to be able to converse with Mrs. James over the past year and members of her family, working to get the right tone and song material together with my daughter -(Actually, Becky had sung several of the jingles herself, and wrote the "SLINKY TRIK STICK" jingle back in the 80's, and working with Betty James and Tom Cureton. With a lot more tweaking, blood, sweat & tears, and a little bit of luck, we hope to eventually let everyone in America enjoy the unusual story of Betty James and Slinky - on the Broadway stage!
Here's to SLINKY and a wonderful lady named Betty James!
