Herman Peterson was bivouacking on the outskirts of Metz, France. The Germans occupied Metz. Herman and the other members of his company were resting before they were going in to attack Metz the next day.
Herman saw some vehicles with the 95th Division insignia go past. He knew his brother Arvid was in the 95th Division. He stopped one of the drivers and asked where they were located. The driver told him they were up the road about a mile or so.
Herman talked to his Captain and asked if he could hike up to try to see his brother. The captain told him to take the jeep, but he had to be sure to be back by a certain time. Herman drove up and asked where he could find Arvid. They told him he was with a group playing cards.
They wre playing on a blanket on the ground. Herman walked up across the blanket from Arvid. Arvid looked up and saw Herman and said, "I'll be a son of a gun!" He jumped up, dropped his cards, and walked right over the blanket. They visited for a while and then Herman had to go back to his outfit.
The next day both outfits shoved off to take Metz. Once Metz was secured, Herman was standing in line to take a shower. Arvid was in another line coming out of the showers. The MPs were trying to keep the lines moving and hollered at them. Someone told them for God's sake it's his brother. So they let them visit a few minutes.
Both brothers returned home safely from the war.
