The pawpaw, a fist-size fruit tasting like a cross between bananas and vanilla custard, is nicknamed the "West Virginia banana," having taken its name from Paw Paw, W. Va.
When Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier on Oct. 14, 1947, he did so with two broken ribs caused by a fall from a horse. The Myra, West Virginia, native kept his injury secret so flight surgeons wouldn’t ground him that day.
America’s second-highest bridge, over New River Gorge in Fayetteville, W.Va., draws bungee jumpers, parachutists, and 250,000 onlookers on Bridge Day every October. It’s the state’s most popular event.
