At the 1952 Olympics in Norway, 19-year-old Andrea Mead Lawrence of Rutland (pop. 17,292) became the first woman skier to win two gold medals at the same event. Her record still stands.
The first bulk milk storage tank in Vermont was introduced in 1952. This innovation allowed dairy farmers to keep milk cool while awaiting pick up by milk trucks.
In 2000, Vermont became the first state to receive a federal grant for farm-based tourism. A survey by the Vermont Agritourism Initiative indicates that a third of Vermont farms offer some type of agritourism, generating $10.5 million annually.
Colchester Bog, more than 180 acres of peat bog, began forming about 9,000 years ago in a channel of the Winooski River. Today, the University of Vermont manages much of the ecological gem as a natural area.
Each year some 400 birds of prey are treated at the Vermont Raptor Center in Woodstock (pop. 3,232).

The Long Trail, a footpath through the Vermont backcountry, stretches 270 miles from Canada to Massachusetts. Some 150 hikers a year trek the entire length of the trail, built by the Green Mountain Club from 1910 to 1930.
Waterbury (pop. 4,915) is home to Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream, a popular stop for summer tourists. Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield founded the company in 1978 with an investment of $12,000.
Singer/actor Hubert Prior “Rudy” Vallee, considered a pioneer of radio variety programs, was born in Island Pond (pop. 849) in 1901.
Born in Middlebury (pop. 8,183) in 1956, professional golfer Patty Sheehan qualified for the LPGA Hall of Fame when she captured her 30th career win in 1993.
Swanton (pop. 6,203) is one of the few places in Vermont where American Indians maintained permanent settlements in the 18th century. The important Abenaki village of Missisiasuk on the Missiquoi River thrived from 1700 to 1758.
The northern-most Civil War engagement occurred in St. Albans (pop. 7,650) in 1864 when Confederate raiders struck three banks. The heists netted $208,000 for the Rebel cause.
Barnard (pop. 958) was home to Dorothy Thompson, an American journalist expelled from Nazi Germany for her anti-Hitler sentiments, and her husband, novelist Sinclair Lewis. She is buried in Village Cemetery.
From 1853 to 1960, the Estey Organ Co. of Brattleboro (pop. 12,005) produced more than 500,000 organs for homes and churches worldwide. An interactive music museum is planned for one of the original factory buildings.
The annual Heritage Days festival in Windsor (pop. 3,756) commemorates the state’s constitution with historic re-enactments, music, and carriage rides. Prior to 1791, Vermont was an independent republic with its own laws, currency, and postal service.
The existence of the coyote in Vermont was first documented in 1948. Respected by American Indians for its wiles and adaptability, the coyote now inhabits all parts of the state.
The Flood of 1927 reportedly lifted a covered bridge from its foundation in Fairfax (pop. 3,765) and swept it downstream. Townspeople recovered the structure and restored it to its Maple Street location, where it still stands today.
The Collins Perly Sports Center in St. Albans (pop. 12,000) devotes 55 acres to baseball, football, hockey, tennis, raquetball, and track. Two local philanthropists funded the entire cost of building the center.
