The soft drink Dr Pepper was invented in Waco in 1885 by Charles Alderton, a young pharmacist working at Morrison’s Old Corner Drug Store. He wanted to invent a drink that tasted the wonderful way the soda fountain smelled. After much experimentation, he finally felt he had hit on “something different.” Other soda fountains were soon buying the syrup from Morrison and serving it. Owner Wade Morrison, who had worked in a drugstore owned by Dr. Charles Pepper of Virginia, apparently named the drink for his former employer.

It was converted into a 3,200-foot fishing pier by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, but about 1,200 feet were lost to a 1999 fire.
