Ridgeway, S.C. (pop. 407), claims to be home of the World’s Smallest Police Station. About the size of a bathroom, it was last used in 1990, after which the new police station opened just next door–at double the size of the original.
Clayton "Peg Leg" Bates lost a leg in a childhood cotton gin accident, but the Fountain Inn, South Carolina, native became a famous dancer, appearing on "The Ed Sullivan Show." His signature step was the "Imitation American Jet Plane," in which he’d jump five feet through the air and land on his peg leg, his good leg sticking out behind.
Artist Peter Freudenburg used 50 gallons of paint to convert a million-gallon water tower in Gaffney, S.C., into a peach—complete with a 12-foot stem and a 60-foot leaf.
