"Hang on Sloopy" is the official rock song of the state of Ohio. The song was written by Celina, Ohio-born rock guitarist Rick Derringer and first recorded by The McCoys, a popular Dayton band, in 1965.
East Liverpool, Ohio, (pop. 13,449) was the "beginning point" of the U.S. Land Survey in 1785. This is the point from which a rectangular-grid land survey system was established to subdivide the land of the Old Northwest Territory.

John Glenn, the oldest astronaut to ever venture into space, was born in Cambridge, Ohio, in 1921. Glenn made history in 1962 as the first American to orbit the Earth, and became the oldest human in space in 1998 on a flight aboard the space shuttle Discovery. He was 77.
