A native or resident of Indiana is known as a Hoosier. The origin of the word is unknown, but one theory is that early settlers answered knocks on their cabin doors by asking, "Who's yere'"
Aviation pioneer Wilbur Wright was born in 1867 on a farm near Millville, Ind. Orville was born four years later in Dayton, Ohio. The brothers moved to Kitty Hawk, N.C., in 1900 to experiment with airplane designs on the open dunes.
After moving from Kentucky at age 8, Abraham Lincoln spent most of his boyhood in southern Indiana. The Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial near Lincoln City marks the site where he lived for 14 years. His mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln, is buried there.
Legendary actor James Dean was born Feb. 8, 1931, in the Seven Gables apartment house at Fourth and McClure Street in Marion, Ind. The "East of Eden" and "Rebel Without a Cause" star grew up in nearby Fairmount, Ind.
