Florida’s first state flag consisted of a white field surrounding the centered state seal. It was changed in 1899 after Gov. Francis Fleming suggested a diagonal red cross be added, similar to the cross of St. David–one of three crosses that comprise Great Britain’s Union Jack.
In 1970 Florida lawmakers passed a bill adopting the moonstone as the official state gem to commemorate the landing of U.S. astronauts on the moon. Apollo 11 had blasted off from the Kennedy Space Center.
Dr. John Gorrie of Apalachicola, Fla., invented the first ice-making machine in 1845 to help cool patients’ during an outbreak of yellow fever. This laid the groundwork for modern refrigeration and air-conditioning.
