Arkansas post in Gillette, Ark., was the first permanent white settlement in the state. Henri de Tonti established the settlement as a trading post in 1686. Flooding from the Arkansas River forced the post to be moved seven times.
Three world-record fish catches have occurred in Arkansas’ lakes and rivers, including a 40 pound, 4 ounce brown trout caught in the Little Red River in 1992.
Diamonds really are forever–in Arkansas, anyway. The state flag features a diamond on a red field, designed so because Crater of Diamonds State Park, near Murfreesboro, is the only place in North America where these gems have been discovered and mined. The diamond is, understandably, the state gem.
For ten years or so, passers-by have been tying together shoes, sneakers—even sandals and cowboy boots—and tossing them into a tree outside of Eureka Springs, Ark. Nobody seems to know why.
