Record Store Days
By Gart Calamar & Phil Gallo
Hardcover, 238 pages ($19.95)
The local record store has fallen on hard times in today’s digital, Internet age. But thanks to collectors, audiophiles and nostalgic baby boomers, shops selling vinyl LPs— “long-playing” records—are making a comeback. This colorful, photo-rich celebration chronicles the rise, fall and modern resurgence of these once-vital retail cogs in the American pop machine, places without which, as noted by producer Sam Phillips, “there would be no Elvis, no Johnny Cash, no B.B. King.”

Saving Private Ryan
Blu-ray ($39.99)
Director Steven Spielberg’s hard-hitting WWII epic looks crisper, gloriously grittier and more wrenchingly realistic than ever in hi-def Blu-ray. But the real treasures here are ten bonus featurettes, including cast members reminiscing about the intense boot camp they endured to prepare for their roles, a look at the special-effects magic behind the movie’s D-Day recreation, and a Tom Hanks-narrated documentary on real-life World War II combat photographers.

Life
Blu-ray $69.99 / DVD $59.98
The breathtaking, 11-part BBC/Discovery Channel series, which aired earlier this spring, was spectacular in both subject matter and scope: Taking high-definition cameras onto every continent, into the air and under the sea, for an amazing sweep of animals and plants in habitats where simply surviving can be difficult. Now available on DVD, this collection includes several bonus documentaries about the extraordinary techniques---and technology---used by the globetrotting filmmakers to bring these 130 separate “life” stories to the screen. And that familiar-sounding narrator? Oprah Winfrey!

Hard Luck Blues
By Rich Remsberg
Softcover, 248 pages ($34.95)
Music provided uplift to counterbalance the drain, strain and pain of the Great Depression. This amazing time-capsule collection of more than 200 images, all created by and culled from the Farm Security Administration’s nationwide photography program in the 1930s and early ’40s, documents music’s many expressions across America at a time when life for most was pretty grim and “ordinary folks” created a soundtrack with whatever they had at their disposal to pluck, pick, strum, drum or blow.

No Time For Sergeants
DVD ($19.98)
Finally available on DVD, this classic 1958 movie comedy helped pave the way to TV’s Mayberry for Andy Griffith, who reprised his Broadway role as all-too-eager Air Force recruit on a hilarious collision course with his stuffed-shirt commanding officer. It also marked the movie debut of Don Knotts, whose association with Griffith would lead to a lifelong friendship as well as one of television’s most famous sheriff-and-deputy duos.

Flicka 2
DVD ($19.90)
Mary O’Hara’s 1941 novel spun off several films and a 1950s TV series. Why trot it out again? Because the last movie, in 2004, lassoed a corral-full of money in DVD sales and rentals. This new version, which bypasses theaters and gallops directly to home video, stars Patrick Warburton (David Puddy on TV’s “Seinfeld”), country singer Clint Black and “The Young And The Restless” actress Tammin Sursock in a new, “now” twist (Ranch hands listening to iPods! Skateboard-riding cowgirls!) to the enduring, heart-tugging tale of a wild horse and a misfit kid.

Tarzan Value-Pak
DVD ($49.95)
By the 1960s, Tarzan needed a new jolt of Hollywood jungle juice. Five new DVD releases from the Warner Bros. archive (“Tarzan and the Great River,” left, plus “Tarzan’s Three Challenges,” “Tarzan Goes To India,” “Tarzan and the Jungle Boy” and “Tarzan and the Valley of Gold”) find the vine-swinging do-gooder in various exotic, sometimes out-of-Africa locales, and feature former stuntman Jock Mahoney and one-time NFL linebacker Mike Henry stepping into the iconic loincloth between 1962 and 1968.

Lucy Calls The President
DVD ($14.98)
When her “Here’s Lucy” TV series ended its seven-year run, Lucille Ball made occasional returns to the tube in a series of comedy specials. This one, which originally aired in 1977, is set into knee-slapping motion when Lucy learns that President Jimmy Carter wants to pay her a personal visit after she makes a call to the White House. (Hey, it’s TV---anything can happen.) Guest stars include Ed McMahon, Steve Allen, Vivian Vance, Gale Gordon and someone who, let’s just say, was probably not accustomed to making appearances in television comedy skits.
