I know first hand how Damascus, VA got the title "Friendliest Town on the Trail". I was born there and my parents, grandparents, and great grand parents were born and raised there. If you have ever heard the song, "Down Home" sung by Alabama (I THINK IT WAS ALABAMA!!!!) then they are describing Damascus perfectly. Everybody does know everybody. They treat you like family even if you are not. It is not so developed that it gets on your nerves but not so primitive that they don't have internet because obviously, they do. (The cell phone service is my only complaint.) There is no reception.

I have seen Damascus go from a town NOBODY knew about, and I do mean nobody to a lot of people know about it and go there for vacations or just to get away. A lady at my son's preschool was wearing a VA Creeper Trail T-shirt one day and I was shocked to find someone here in Northern VA to even know Damascus existed, but she said they go there a few times a year just to get away.

The article was awesome and was exactly true. There are no red lights, and if you think of Mayberry (Andy Griffith Show for you young folks) then that is Damascus. The sidewalks are rolled up at 6:00pm and nothing (well almost nothing since they got a new grocery store in town, before they had to go to Abingdon or Bristol to get groceries.) is open on Sundays. Sounds like heaven, huh? Well almost. If you have any questions, or comments on this article please feel free to e-mail me. Thanks and God Bless!!!!!
