I enjoyed this article but it didn't go in depth enough for me-it looked like some of the homes had no foundation. Is that legal in their state to live in?
Hi Pauline,

Thanks for commenting on the article. Some of the smaller homes you will see are on trailers to avoid the minimum size requirements imposed in many areas.

Hello,

All of these homes call themselves environmentally friendly.

I'm curious to know where does all the grey-water and solid waste go?

A cesspool, holding tank (which requires expensive vacuum truck removal) , or even a chemical toilet which still requires removal?

The reason I ask is I’m currently developing an inexpensive solution to this problem and was curious just how it is currently being handled?

Thanks,

-J
Depending on your local code/wilderness area etc, why not use the greywater on your orchard or flower garden-- and try the solutions listed in the old book, GOODBYE TO THE FLUSH TOILET?

Great article! I grew up spending summers in small cottages and cabins so when I bought an moved into my 1993 Class A, diesel pusher motor coach two years ago I felt right at home. In comparison to the houses you've written about my Beaver is quite spacious. She has 288 sq. ft. of living area plus the basement storage area. I paid $60,000.00 for her and I think it's the best money I ever spent.

Hello to all of you folks interested in having a tiny house designed and/or built. I am am launching a new business (and soon a website) to specialize in exactly that. Through my repeated contact with Jay Shafer's Tumbleweed Tiny House Company, I have found no objection on their part to my building his designs (as long as I pay 'em for the plans). Let's say you've decided on one of his designs and you want it built, but you don't want to pay to have it shipped across the Mississippi to the Eastern U.S. You also don't want to drive to California to pick it up and tow it back East. I will build it in Connecticut, and you can pick it up here. I will charge whatever Tumbleweed is charging for any given model. Customizations will cost extra (or less) depending on what you have in mind. If you'd like to see my own designs, I can send you my portfolio for ten bucks. Okay, so you've decided on a model. I will need 50% of the sales price to get started. This will tell me in no uncertain terms that you are committed to buying what I build for you. It will also give me the money required to pay for the plans and materials needed to build your home (this is a start-up business, I don't have $25,000.00 sitting in an account that I can buy everything with based on the hope that you will reimburse me when I am finished). I will keep you regularly informed about the progress on your building. When it is half finished, you'll send me another 25% of the sales price so that I can "stay afloat" while I finish it. The final 25% can be paid to me when you come to pick up your completed house. There are two very important things you need to know before you decide to have me build your home. First, since this is a new business, I'll need to keep my current job until I know that I can earn a steady and adequate income from it. This means that I won't be able to devote myself full-time to building your house. I'll work on it evenings, weekends, and on vacation time. This leads to the second important point, which is the amount of time it will take me to finish your structure. The best case scenario I can predict, is that it will take me AT LEAST three months to build it, probably longer. So there you have it. If you have any questions, contact me at my email address, jaycreighton@hotmail.com. I hope that we can begin collaborating on your new tiny home soon! Thanks for reading this, ~Jay

Hi,

I am relatively new here and must say that most of your articles are very interesting, however the one that is dear to me is about "Living with Autism" we should all be very aware of that.

Thanks,
