Jim Cantore, Guy Mitchell, Scott Grimes, Kari Matchett

What can you tell me about Jim Cantore?
—Debra C. Tussey, South Lake Tahoe, Calif.

Cantore, a field weatherman who started working for The Weather Channel fresh out of college 15 years ago, frequently is dispatched to cover "extreme weather"—chasing tornadoes, riding out blizzards or waiting on monster hurricanes to make landfall. While he doesn't worry about being in harm's way, he knows his wife and two kids are concerned. "But they know that daddy won't be happy," Cantore says, "unless he's out swashbuckling in a storm."

What can you tell us about Guy Mitchell?
—Mary Bona, Sequim, Wash.

Mitchell, whose 1950s hits include "My Heart Cries for You" and "The Roving Kind," was born Al Cernick in Detroit, the son of Yugoslavian immigrant parents. His last No. 1, "Heartaches by the Number," came in 1959. He also had a handful of acting roles, most notably in the movies Those Redheads from Seattle (1953) and Red Garters (1954). He died in 1999 at age 72.

Is the Scott Grimes on ER the same Scott Grimes who has an album out?
—Mary Daly, Lebanon, Mo.

Yes, they are the same. Massachusetts-born Grimes, 34, began his career at age 10 as a singer on Broadway and later traveled with Bob Hope on USO tours. As an actor, he had roles on TV's Party of Five and Band of Brothers and in the movies Crimson Tide, Critters and Mystery, Alaska. Portraying Dr. Archie Morris on ER for the past three years, he's also managed to keep together a band, Scott Grimes and the Misdemeanors (of which his wife, Dawn, also is a member), touring and performing on weekends. Last year, Grimes released a CD called Livin' on the Run.

I've fallen for Kari Matchett, who plays the brainy, beautiful Dr. Underlay on Invasion. What can you tell me about her, including how to correctly pronounce her name?
—S. Cherry, Findlay, Ohio

The Invasion actress (who pronounces her name KAH-ree MATCH-it) was born in rural Spalding, Saskatchewan, where passing motorists today can see a sign welcoming them to her birthplace. Matchett, 35, attended theatrical school in Montreal and later Russia, and began working almost immediately after graduation in television on the A&E mini-series 5ive Days to Midnight, the CBS movie A Very Merry Christmas, the Sci-Fi Network series Earth Final Conflict and the FOX-TV series Wonderfalls. For her biggest role yet, in the aliens-among-us series Invasion, she relocated earlier this year to Los Angeles, where she enjoys running, yoga and living half a block from something she never had back in Saskatchewan: a beach.
