Buying a Mattress
The right mattress can mean the difference between tossing and turning or getting a good night's sleep.
"It's important to consider replacing it after five to seven years," says Karin Mahoney, spokeswoman for the Better Sleep Council. Studies show that sleeping on a new mattress can reduce stiffness and back and shoulder pain, and improve comfort.
A mattress can be an expensive purchase, and finding the right one takes time. Here are some tips to remember the next time you shop for a mattress:
- Try out many mattresses before buying, testing them with the person who shares your bed.
- Take off your shoes, lie down and turn over, like you would at home, testing how the mattress feels in all sleeping positions. Comfort is key.
- Make sure your back feels aligned, your circulation is good and you have no pressure on your spine.
- You shouldn't be able to feel innerspring coils.
- Buy the box spring built for the mattress; the two work in tandem. Otherwise, the mattress may not perform as it should, and the manufacturer's warranty could be voided.
- Comparison shopping is difficult because manufacturers make different models for different retailers. Instead, compare delivery fees, financing options and fees for removal of your old mattress.
- Look for retailers offering trial periods, so you can sleep on the mattress before committing to a purchase.
- Negotiate the best deal possible. Retailers often accept a lower price.
- Chances are your favorite mattress will go on sale. Just ask when.
