Guiding Light, Charlize Theron, April Bowlby, Veronica Lake, the Jonas Brothers
Q After 70 years on radio and TV, why is Guiding Light going off the air? Can you tell me how many times the character of Reva (Kim Zimmer) has been married? —
Barb Muncy, El Paso, TexasWell, you'll get some idea by counting the string of last names in Reva's full name, Reva Shayne Lewis Lewis Spaulding Lewis Winslow Cooper Lewis Lewis O'Neill! But several of her marriages were re-couplings to the same man, Joshua Lewis, the true love of her life.
Guiding Light, which began on radio in 1937 before moving to TV in 1952, will air its final episode Sept. 18 after 72 years on the air. Increased production costs and, more importantly, declining ratings are the reasons for its demise.
Q Charlize Theron is one of my favorite actresses. Does she have any new project coming soon?—
Hung Sa Kloeung, Eureka, Calif. The South African-born actress, 33, has two movies slated for later this year. First up, watch for her in
The Burning Plain, a romantic mystery in which Kim Basinger plays her mother. The film was screened last year at festivals but is supposed to get a limited release this fall. Then, Theron will co-star with Robert Duvall and Guy Pearce in the big-screen adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel
The Road, a post-apocalyptic tale about a man and his son.
Q I love the show Two and a Half Men. Can you tell me more about Kandi, Alan's second wife, and why she left the show? —
Chris B., Anita, Penn. April Bowlby, 29, who played Kandi, left the show because producers felt it would be too disruptive to the successful plot if Alan remained married. She has joined the cast of
Drop Dead Diva, which recently debuted on
Lifetime.
Q Whatever happened to Veronica Lake, who starred opposite Alan Ladd in The Blue Dahlia?—
Marie Bryan, New Kensington, Pa.Lake, who appeared in seven movies with Ladd, had a film career that was in its prime from 1941 to 1946 with such credits as
I Married a Witch,
Sullivan's Travels,
This Gun for Hire and
So Proudly We Hail. Also famous for her peek-a-boo hairstyle and as a pin-up model, she died in 1973 of hepatitis at age 53.
Q I love the Jonas Brothers, especially Joe. I know he started out doing music, but now he and his brothers are acting each week on TV's Jonas. I was wondering how he feels about making the change?—
Caroline Wallander, Lake Charles, La."Acting is totally different for us," says Joe Jonas, 20. "Going into it, we were pretty nervous. We did the movie
Camp Rock, but we didn't know exactly how doing a television series would roll out. It's been a lot of fun." Joe and brothers Nick and Kevin have been on the concert trail this summer with songs from their new
Lines, Vines & Trying Times album. They'll soon start work on the movie
Camp Rock 2.

You said: "April Bowlby, 29, is the actress who played Kandi, Alan's fiancee, not his second wife."
I hate to inform you but you are incorrect. The characters Alan and Kandi were married in Las Vegas when Charlie and Mia called off their wedding (Season 3 Episode 24). Kandi eventually divorced Alan but not after stringing him along for a while. She got the dog and the condo, Alan got to go back to Charlie.
