Dozens of Volunteers Working to Clean up the Rivers of the Coalfields
This original submitted content does not necessarily represent the editorial style, standards or view of American Profile.
There are dozens of volunteers from all of the United States who have dedicated a year or more of their life to improve the water quality in the coal country of the East. These people have such passion for the environment that they are willing to give all they have got to spend a year of their life building the capacity necessary to have cleaner healthier rivers in your local communities. The volunteers are organized through AmeriCorps VISTA, OSM, and the ACCWT. These people are using their skills to bring the people of coal country together to fix the mess left behind by past coal mining projects. Before the Coal Mine Reclamation law went into effect there was no law forcing coal companies to clean up the mess they left on the environment after they mined. Now there is minimal funding available to clean up these messes. Due to the very minimal funding it is necessary for volunteers to come in and organize clean up efforts and find additional funding to ensure that these messes do not go unfixed. So please recognize that there are people in this country working with recognition or acknowledgement to clean YOUR water.
