Escape the Present, Discover the Past in Historic Nauvoo, Illinois
Nauvoo, Illinois - With the rising cost of gasoline this summer, many families are looking for fun and entertainment that won't empty the bank and yet be fun for the entire family. Historic Nauvoo, Illinois is just down the road, yet seems like a million miles away. According to Jeanene Dean, Executive Director of Nauvoo Tourism, "Nauvoo is really a great place for families to come. It is very surprising how much is here to see and do. My children love Pioneer Pastimes where they can literally spend hours playing pioneer games. We tried for a long time to walk on stilts." She goes on to say, "what was so wonderful about the experience is that they had fun and didn't realize that they were learning about the past." Nauvoo is filled with history, beauty and fun, and takes you back to a time when life was simpler.
Today Nauvoo's population is approximately 1000 people. However, in the 1840's Nauvoo was one of the largest cities in Illinois with a population of 12,000 - 15,000 people. The History of Nauvoo (Hebrew for Beautiful) can be described as a series of brush strokes laid down by artisans in a masterpiece that took nearly 200 years to create starting with it's initial stroke being laid at the frontier's edge on the western United States border in the early 1800's.
Through the decades, Nauvoo's history has been painted by colorful cultures that remain evident today in the architecture and the historical remnants. Escape the present and discover the past in Nauvoo which includes the Sac & Fox Indians, the Mormon movement, the Utopian Icarians and later German settlers who all played a vital part in the final landscape of history in Nauvoo.
Nauvoo is one of only 2,500 places that hold national significance as a National Historic Landmark with more than 60 restored historic sites, 5 visitor's centers, museums, shopping, dining and great accommodations, which all come together to tell the story and bring the past to life.
