What is Bob Saget, the former host of Americas Funniest Home Videos, doing now? We think hes a funny and entertaining performer.
Marian W., California
You can find Bob Saget every week on The WBs Raising Dad, where he plays a widowed high school English teacher raising two daughters. The weekly series has the same gentle, family-friendly humor as his past hit series, Full House, which ran for eight years. The 46-year-old comic actor was born in Philadelphia and was a creative child who played guitar, wrote songs, made films, and wrote humorous sketches to amuse his friends. It was the perfect lead-in to pursue a career as a standup comic after graduating from Temple University. He moved to California and was the winning bachelor when he appeared on The Dating Game in 1979. He soon found steady work on television and in clubs. In 1987, he landed the dad role in Full House. Two years later, he took on hosting duties of Americas Funniest Home Videos. His interest in filmmaking remained constant through his career. He directed and produced the television movie, For Hope, based on the life of his sister, Gay, who died from scleroderma, an immune system disease, in 1994. His other directorial projects include the Norm McDonald movie Dirty Work and Jitters for Lifetime Television.
Whats the name of the lead singer of The Mavericks? Id like to know a little bit about him. How did the group start singing together?
Elizabeth P., Nebraska
Raul Malo, the lead singer and songwriter for The Mavericks, was born in Miami, Fla., of Cuban descent. Miami isnt a hotbed of country music, but Malos parents had records by Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, and Roy Orbison. The music appealed to Malo, who found a fellow rockabilly fan in Robert Reynolds, whose best friend was Paul Deakin. The three of them formed a band and soon began writing their own songs, which held the influence of those older artists without copying them outright. They added a guitarist, called themselves the Mavericks, and eventually made their way to Nashville, Tenn. They won CMA Awards in 1995 and 1996 and released their last album, Trampoline, in 1998. The band is not working together right now, and Malo went on to explore other musical genres. Last year, he appeared on Los Super Sevens album, Canto. Malo has released his own solo album, Today, which covers all types of music, while maintaining a definite Latin tone. Malo and his wife, Betty, live in Nashville with their children.
