Civic-minded Reina Arbuckle and Victor Salinas organize a blood drive amongst their fellow high school students for United Blood Services.Reina Arbuckle and Victor Salinas, two 17-year old students, want Ventura County, CA to be prepared with sufficient blood for the upcoming holiday season.
Arbuckle and Salinas are leading the effort at Foothill Technology High School to raise blood for United Blood Services. The students’ goal is to raise 25 pints of blood during the one-day blood drive held in the parking lot of Ventura College.
“After all the research we have to do for this project,” said Arbuckle, “I know about the vitality of blood to my community.”
“It’s crucial to donate blood because one pint can save up to three lives,” said Salinas. “It’s also important that I donate because I’m O Negative, a blood type in high demand.”
After completing the blood drive, the students will be eligible for a scholarship from United Blood Services. Arbuckle wants to apply at Pepperdine University and Salinas wants to attend California State University Channel Islands.
“I’m so impressed with the responsibility and dedication that Reina and Victor are exhibiting while they organize this blood drive,” said Holly Nash, Donor Recruitment Manager at United Blood Services. “It is very impressive to see such leadership from people so young.”
Arbuckle, Salinas and Nash appeared on Coach Ron Tunick’s THE BUSINESS OF LIFE radio show on KKZZ AM 1400 on Monday, November 9, 2009 to announce the drive.
“We’re proud of these two young people for making a difference in their community,” said Tunick. “Reina and Victor are releasing the hero inside of them by organizing this drive.”
