I had a Sheltie, a beautiful girl, who was almost 12 years old last
Valentine's day when she had to be put to sleep. She was dying from
kidney and heart failure and she "told" us when it was time to say
goodbye. She had been a good companion to our family, especially when
my mother who has Alzheimer's moved in with us. Tinker kept mom
company during the day if we had to gone and she gave my mom someone to
care for and talk to. It was so hard to let her go but a couple of
months ago, I felt like it was time to start looking for another
Sheltie. The ones we've found have been far from our home and they are so expensive. We finally found a litter about 8 miles from our home and
went to look at them. On the way home, I asked my husband, "Can we
really afford to get another Sheltie right now?" When we got home, he
handed me an envelope with a card in it that had been up on the
Christmas tree. He said, "This was supposed to be for Christmas but
you might need it now." When I opened the card, there, taped to the
inside of the card.... was a cashier's check and a photograph of Tinker
with a handwritten note that said, "I love you, momma. Find one just
like me.." signed.. Tinker. Of course, my husband did this, but I
call it a gift from a Sheltie because it is what Tinker would want.
This was the sweetest and kindest thing I can remember anyone ever
doing for me. It doesn't seem like it's been ten months since she left
us, and we will never find one JUST like her, but we love our new one
just as much and we will see glimpses of Tinker through her. My
husband's act of kindness will never be forgotten!
